Summary from Saturday, March 28 (posted by MBenoit)
Lesson Outline
Students will
1). Complete a carbon footprint survey addressing both home-heating and transportation energy use
2). Attend a 1 1/2 to 2 hours break-out session at UTC.
Date: Either April 16 or April 17
Time: 8:00-11:00 a.m. (including travel time)
Specific goal: Students will collect and analyze real-life data related to energy use and carbon dioxide production
Materials list (items needed from Annette): None at this time.
Plan for May 15: Short PowerPoint and/or summarizing project goals and results
Other plan details & brainstorming ideas:
--Teachers will present the requirements of the project to students and ask for interested students to volunteer. Target goal: No more than 40 students to allow students to work in 4 small groups at UTC and to be actively engaged in analyses, presentations, etc.
--Adapt the MEEP/DEP carbon footprint format with minor modifications
--Have enough calculators on hand for students to use to analyze their own carbon footprint data
--Permission slips and photo release forms (If we take photos and would like to include them in our May 15 or other presentation)
--allow students to rank their first and second choice of groups so they have some input and we can arrange groups quickly?
--Wrap-Up: have one student from each group report 1 of their 4 findings? Have students form a 'human graph' reflecting their carbon footprints
--Follow-up: Students who attend present their findings to their classmates at their home schools
--Ideas for next year: With more lead time, teachers could extend the inquiry portion of the project by having students generate questions, research required information (ex. average mpg for a particular make/model vehicle)
